Micheal Phelps

the swimmer of the century

micheal phelps is the superstar of the swimming world. he has won no less than 28 olympic medals! he swam in 4 olympics - starting as young as 15 in his first olympics! Phelps began swimming at the age of seven, partly because of the influence of his sisters and partly to provide him with an outlet for his energy. After retirement in 2016, he stated "The only reason I ever got in the water was my mom wanted me to just learn how to swim. My sisters and myself fell in love with the sport, and we decided to swim."When Phelps was in the sixth grade, he was diagnosed with ADHD but despite that, people still say he is the best swimmer in the world and he has been awarded the title of best Olympian in history - phelps was a true superstar.

Missy Franklin

the super sprinter 

missy Franklin was a super star sprinter. she won 4 gold medals and 1 bronze medals in the 2012 olympics. she holds the WORLD RECORD in the 200 m backstroke and 4 by 100 m relay! she was only 17 in her 2012 olympics, and also returned to the olympics in 2016, but didn't win any medals. she then retired in 2018, because of several issues including severe shoulder pain. Missy swam for the Colorado stars before qualifying for the USA olympic team with her fellow swimmer kara Joyce, before the 2012 olympics, while still swimming for Colorado too.  she was the only female to qualify for 7 events for the 2012 olympics and she was a very talented swimmer! she has an amazing movie called "touch the wall" - its very, very good I would highly recommend it! here is the link to the trailer, then you can find the movie on amazon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ej8hnUc2oT8

Mark Spitz

Mark Spitz is a former American competitive swimmer and he won nine olympic medals. at the 1972 olympics, mark spitz was the most successful athlete there, winning 7 gold medals - all in record time. he kept these records for 36 years (!) before they they were beaten by Micheal phelps in 2008. his main strokes were butterfly and freestyle, and he was a sprinter ranging his gold medals in 1972 from 100m freestyle and butterfly to 200m relays. he was a truly outstanding swimmer and one we definitely won't forget in a hurry!

Ian Thorpe 

the "thorpedo"

Ian Thorpe became the youngest ever male to represent Australia. he won 5 olympic medals, the most won by any Australian ever! in total, Thorpe has won eleven World Championship gold medals; this is the third highest number of gold medals won by any swimmer. Thorpe was the first person to have been named world swimmer of the year - four times! Thorpe announced his retirement from competitive swimming in November 2006. the thorpedo has definitely made his place in swimming history forever!

Janet Evans

"Miss Perpetual Motion"

Janet Evans is a former American Olympian and gold medal and world record holder. Janet Evans was s superstar in the 1988 olympics and the 1992 olympics -gaining 4 gold medals. Evans became the first woman to win back-to-back Olympic and world championship titles in any one swimming event by winning the 1988 and 1992 Olympic gold medals and the 1991 and 1994 world championships. she was a phenomenal long distance swimmer, specialising in 400m, 800m and 1500 m . fun fact - Evans was only 1.65 metres tall yet she was still a swimming superstar! she also gained the nickname miss perpetual motion aft the 1988 olympics. she ended her career of olympic swimming at the 1996 olympics. she will be remembered in the world of swimming!

Alexander Popov

"Czar of Swimming"

Alexander Popov is a former Russian competitive swimming and is widely considered the greatest sprint swimmer in history! Popov won gold in the 50-metre and 100 m freestyle at the 1992 olympics and repeated this incredible achievement at the 1996 olympics, and is the only male in Olympic games history to defend both titles. He held the world record in the 50 m for eight years, and the 100 m for six. After retiring, Popov was elected a full member of the international Olympic committee in December 1999 AND Popov earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in sports coaching from the Russian Academy. he is certainly a swimmer that had marked bis place in history!
